Windsor police are begging drivers to put away their phones.
Officers conducted a traffic blitz focused on distracted driving in three locations across the city between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday.
By the end of the day, 99 drivers were ticketed for Highway Act infractions, insurance violations, or written warnings. More than a third of them, 36 drivers were tickets for using their cell phone behind the wheel.
A release from the Windsor Police Service said deaths from crashes caused by distracted driving have doubled since 2000.
"Every licenced driver in Ontario passed a test. Think back to that test day. Would you really have considered operating that phone during that test? Absolutely not -- so, don't do it now," read the release.
Distracted driving legislation clearly states using a phone to talk, text, dial, or email while driving is an offence, even if you are stopped at a red light.
