The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is declaring success now that just over one per cent of high school students across the region have updated their vaccinations and records.
The Immunization of School Pupils Act requires vaccinations for eight diseases, including Measles, Meningococcal disease, Polio, and Pertussis or Whooping Cough. Without them, students face suspension from class for up to 20 days.
As of this week, there are still 223 students who remain suspended.
As of last week, there were 1,519 students barred from attending school, but health officials expected the number to drop as the days went by.
There are approximately 19,000 high school students in Windsor-Essex, and in June, the health unit needed completed records from 13,000. That number was unusually high because in-school vaccinations were on hold during the pandemic.
Wednesday morning's media update was the final one for CEO Nicole Dupuis. She leaves her position on Friday.
Eleanor Groh will resume her duties as the interim CEO until the health unit hires a permanent replacement.
