Personal safety reminder issued at U of W

The University of Windsor has reminded its community of safety measures after at least two campus incidents were reported in a week.

The school's community police division said a student reported being followed to their vehicle by a suspicious person late Tuesday night.

"The incident and individual are similar to what was described in another complaint filed earlier this week, so we are reminding students, faculty, staff, and visitors to campus to use the enhanced safety protocols the University has in place," said U of W Campus Police Director Matthew D’Asti. "We also want our community to know that we are implementing additional safety measures by increasing foot patrols on campus. We are also working closely with Windsor Police to ensure safety."

Campus police are working with the U of W Student Alliance to remind students, faculty, and staff about the resources available to help them feel safe on campus. The Safe Lancer app puts users in touch with both U of W police and Windsor police, allowing users to chat directly with a dispatcher, and report incidents. The app also provides instant notifications for campus emergencies and information on how to find support services.

Another feature is the "blue light" button, which instantly puts users in touch with the police if they feel threatened or uncomfortable. Blue light poles are placed across campus, serving as beacons to those in the area, providing a sense of security for the user until help arrives.

D'Asti also said escort services are available, and the Walk Safe Program provides additional protection with volunteers on call to ensure safety.

"Campus Police also provides a Working Alone service for individuals studying or working late on campus 24-hours a day, seven days a week," said D'Asti.

Complete details on the Safe Lancer app can be found on its webpage, on the official U of W website.
