It didn't take very much debate for Windsor City Councillors to agree to a three-year contract with Bird Canada to continue a popular program into the future.
Bird Canada has operated Windsor's public e-scooter and e-bike program since May 2021, when the city launched its pilot project. Its new contract will ensure the program continues for at least into 2026. There is an option to extend the contract for an extra year.
Bird Canada was the only proponent to submit a proposal in response to the city's request for proposals in January. Some councillors wondered if it should restart the bidding process to see if there were any other interested parties out there.
However, that could delay the start of this year's season, not to mention possibly expose the city to liability should Bird Canada decide to launch a court battle.
The company will supply 375 e-scooters and 75 e-bikes this year but said that could be expanded to 600 vehicles.
This year's program will also be expanded almost city-wide. The public will be encouraged to use the vehicles on any paved park path.
The agreement won't cost Windsor anything. Bird Canada will submit a $15,000 licensing fee each year.
