City to begin spring tree planting initiative

Over 6,000 trees will be planted this year to maintain the urban tree canopy in Windsor.

The City of Windsor is planting 2,500 trees and an additional 3,500 trees will be planted through community and partnership programs with the Essex Region Conservation Authority and Scout Tree Group.

"We're looking to maintain the existing tree canopy which requires the planting of 2,500 large trees each year but we will be bringing forward to council later this year or early next year the Urban Forest Management Plant," said Executive Director of Parks and Facilities James Chacko. "That will allow council to direct us going forward with what they would like the overall tree canopy to be."

City staff manage around 100,000 trees in parks and along our streets along with an unknown number in natural areas.

Anyone interested in having a tree planted on their property can contact 311. Trees are planted in the spring and fall. All trees planted by the city are native to the area.
