Tecumseh council rejects motion to temporarily remove street parking

Tecumseh Town Council has said no to a proposal that would have temporarily eased congestion along a thoroughfare.

At its meeting Monday night, councillors voted 5-2 against a motion introduced by Deputy Mayor Joe Bachetti to temporarily remove street parking from the south side of Tecumseh Road East between Southfield Drive and Lesperance Road.

Bachetti had introduced the motion following complaints from residents about traffic jams on Tecumseh East during peak times.

"If determined as soon as possible to be a feasible option by Public Works and Engineering Services, that on-street parking on a portion of the south side of Tecumseh Road be eliminated for a temporary period of time, or implement a daily no parking time, restrictions, on either or both sides of Tecumseh Road, so as to help ease congestion for commuters," read the motion.

The issue has been compounded by a series of construction projects in the area, such as the Banwell Road-EC Row Expressway interchange, which led to more drivers using Tecumseh Road East as an alternate route.

Bachetti and Ward 5 Councillor Tania Jobin voted in favour.

Voting against the motion were Mayor Gary McNamara and Councillors Alicia Higgison, James Dorner, Rico Tonial, and Brian Houston.
