In a bid to keep city parks cleaner, the City of Windsor is expanding waste and recycling stations.
More than 750 garbage and recycling silos are going into parks across the city. The silos are designed for high-use park spaces, hold more waste than traditional metal cans, and the city believes they'll reduce litter, improve efficiency, and make parks more welcoming.
With support from city council and the Mayor's Office, the silos will be installed this year.
"The City of Windsor is proud of our public outdoor spaces," said Mayor Drew Dilkens. "Across the community, residents can enjoy more than 206 parks, over 174 kilometres of multi-use trails, including six kilometres along the waterfront, the Malden Park mountain bike trails, Ganatchio Trail, Little River Corridor Trail, and the 42.5 km Windsor Loop. That's a lot of area for our city teams to maintain and keep looking their best."
Where they'll go in will be determined, in part, by public input.
In the meantime, residents are encouraged to fill out a survey and make their thoughts known. The survey ends February 28.
While selecting sites for the new silos, the city will consider proximity to accessible pathways, adequate truck access, installation on grass or soil, and placement in high-use areas like picnic sites, playgrounds, splash pads, sports courts, trails, sports fields, and riverfront areas.
"I'm pleased to be able to support the installation of new garbage and recycling silos that will go a long way towards reducing overflow, minimizing the impacts of waste, and keeping our parks looking great all year long," added Dilkens.
