Windsor Fire and Rescue Services can buy new equipment after Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Andrew Dowie announced funding for the service.
A total of $119,211 will purchase a new bunker gear washer extractor, bunker gear dryer cabinet, a SCBA air fill compressor, and more personal protective gear.
"This equipment will help ensure firefighters have access to clean, safe gear, reducing exposure to harmful contaminants," said a release from Dowie.
"Our firefighters risk their lives every day to protect our community, and it's vital they have the tools to do their jobs safely and effectively," said Dowie.
Windsor Fire Chief James Waffle says protective gear keeps firefighters healthy in an occupation where they are often exposed to harmful contaminants.
"Cancer is one of the most serious occupational challenges our firefighting profession faces," said Waffle. "This provincial investment demonstrates a meaningful commitment to prevention, awareness, and firefighter health."
The money is from the Fire Protection Grant, supports all 380 municipal fire services in the province, and will help approximately 33,000 firefighters protect their cities and towns.
Funds from the grant program help support minor infrastructure upgrades, equipment to fight lithium-ion battery fires, and personal protective equipment.
Dowie recently announced $34,893 for the Tecumseh Fire Service.
