Student spells "comprehensible" correctly to win local Scripps Spelling Bee

A Grade 8 student from Maranatha Christian Academy in Windsor will represent the region at the upcoming Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington this May.

Isaac Brogan went 38 rounds in the intensely competitive event featuring 34 students from elementary schools in Windsor-Essex, Chatham-Kent, and Sarnia-Lambton.

This year's WFCU Credit Union Scripps Spelling Bee Regional Final was held on Saturday at the St. Clair College Centre for the Arts.

Brogan won after successfully spelling the word "comprehensible."

In addition to a six-day trip to Washington, D.C., he also won a $200 educational scholarship, a one-year subscription to the Merriam-Webster Unabridged Online dictionary, and a subscription to the Britannica Encyclopedia online.

"Supporting the next generation with meaningful opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive remains central to our mission," said President and CEO of WFCU Credit Union, Eddie Francis. "We're proud to once again champion the WFCU Scripps Spelling Bee Regional Final, helping inspire curiosity, confidence, and a love of learning in youth across our community."

Kavya Vasudeva, a Grade 8 student from Christ the King French Immersion Catholic Elementary School, battled it out with Brogan for 16 rounds to come in second place.
