Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre hinted at his plan to propose a new Auto Pact during a visit to Windsor Friday morning.
He made the stop with Conservative MPs Kathy Borrelli, Chris Lewis, and Harb Gill before making his way across the border to meet with auto industry leaders and U.S. policy makers in Michigan.
"We've calibrated a plan that will allow us to repatriate and massively increase our auto production on this side of the border while at the same time making it attractive to the United States on the other side of the border," said Poilievre.
He indicated that as part of the plan, Canada needs to build more leverage for trade negotiations.
"I'm proposing we build up the strategic energy and mineral reserve and make that available to allies with whom we have favourable trade terms. I'm proposing that we massively increase our energy production, something that is extremely important to the United States, especially now," said Poilievre.
Poilievre will be back in Windsor on Sunday to release the full details of his Auto Pact strategy.
"It would align our regulations with the U.S., it would take the GST off Canadian made automobiles, and it would make a realistic proposal to eliminate tariffs on the sale of Canadian automobiles in the United States of America," said Poilievre.
