Vet Suggests Ontario PED Situation Promising

A veterinarian from Tavistock says there's still a lot of winter yet.

But Doctor Allister Scorgie says so far the PED problem appears to be under control.

Scorgie was at yesterday's Centrailia Swine Research Update in Kirkton.

He cautioned that it is still early and there isn't a lot of data to make accurate projections but he had heard suggestions with all of the controls and strategies that were in place there could be twelve to eighteen new cases in Ontario this winter.

So far he's aware of about five.

Scorgie points out that Canadian producers were lucky in that they saw the damage PED had caused in the U-S and so took the threat seriously initiated rigid bio-security plans.

Scorgie still cautions thought that what happens this year doesn't necessarily mean PED won't bounce back next year or that there won't be another disease to take its place.

So he says it's very important to maintain the bio-security practices that have worked so well in the last year.

Doctor Scorgie says the indications to this point are encouraging.

Scorgie feels the situation in the U-S provided an effective warning for Canadian producers.
