Optimism In Pork Sector

Market analyst Kevin Grier says there are more reasons for optimism in Canada's pork sector than there have been for some time.

While the industry has some issues, Grier feels many of them are short-term.  He told the recent Banff Pork Seminar the market potential looks good domestically and is particularly promising both short- and long-term for export.  The market analyst told the seminar there are still some important issues to tackle.

Among those, currency value fluctuations , animal welfare codes driven by outspoken fringe groups and global trade disruptions.

Grier cites the U-S Country Of Origin Labelling situation as an example of a trade disruptor impacting the Canadian pork industry.

Despite all that, Grier says cautionary optimism is in order - fueled at least in part by the resiliency the pork sector has shown during tough times.
