Statscan Reports Fewer Cattle On Canadian Farms

The Canadian cattle herd continues to shrink.

Statistics Canada says this country's farmers had 11 point 9 million cattle on their farms on January 1st.

That's down 2 and a half per cent from a year ago and the lowest number since January of 1993.

The USDA says cattle numbers in that country were 89 point 8 million head - up by 1 per cent on January first from a year ago.

Canadian hog producers had 13 point 2 million animals.

That's up 1 point 7 per cent from a year ago.

In the U-S - the December 1st hog inventory was up 2 per cent from December of 2013 at 66 point 1 million head.

And the number of sheep on Canadian farms January first was down 1 point 8 per cent at 858 thousand 6 hundred head.

According to the USDA - American sheep and lamb numbers January 1st were 6.14 million head - up 1 per cent from a year ago.

Statscan says the number of farmers reporting cattle and calves was down 1 point 1 per cent from a year ago.

The number of hog farms in Canada was down 0 point 7 per cent from January 1st of 2014.

Here in Ontario, the cattle inventory was down 2 point 3 per cent from a year ago while the hog inventory was up 0 point 9 per cent.

Two men arrested in Tashmoo Ave. standoff

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
