U. of G. Research Innovations Make Top 100 List

The creation of the Yukon Gold potato has been named one of the top 50 life-changing breakthroughs from Ontario universities over the past 100 years.

It was developed by Gary Johnston of the University of Guelph's Plant Agriculture Department in 1966 to grow in challenging climates.

It's taste and popularity have made it a household name.

The Yukon Gold potato is one of five University of Guelph innovations on the top 50 list.

Another with an agricultural connection is the vaccine against shipping fever pneumonia in cattle, credited with being the foundation for all vaccines against this major disease.

The list was put together by the Council of Ontario Universities as part of a campaign to highlite the research being done in the province's universities.

Starting April 1st, the public will be invited to vote on those discoveries, with the goal of coming up with a top-five list by this fall.

Voting can be done online or at fairs and public events over the summer.
