Major Canadian Dairy Launches New Animal Welfare Policy

Saputo has introduced a new animal welfare policy.

The company says the policy is based on core principles and scientific evidence.

It includes what the company calls zero tolerance for any act of animal cruelty, a commitment to eliminating tail docking in dairy cattle and ensuring a minimum industry standard for pain control when dehorning or disbudding cattle.

The dairy has also signed deals with the University of Guelph and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The Guelph deal will see the new Saputo Dairy Care Program offered through the Campbell Centre for the Study of Animal Welfare and the Ontario Veterinary College.

The Wisconsin deal covers programs involving housing for dairy cattle and low-stress cattle handling approaches.

The Montreal-based dairy giant got caught up in last year's animal welfare controversy at one of it's suppliers in B-C.
