Nearing Time To Assess Winter Wheat Crop

Farmers are advised to assess their winter wheat crop in late April to early May.

OMAFRA's Cereals Specialist Joanna Follings says a replant decision based on that assessment should be made as late as possible.

A rough rule-of-thumb is that 20 plants per foot of row will yield 100 per cent of the potential crop.

For wheat planted October 5th - that's about 80 bushels an acre.

It's 72 bushels for wheat planted October 15th.

Follings recommends not focusing only on the bad spots in the field - do a number of stand counts to get a broader perspective of what's happening in that field.

If 5 per cent of the field is in poor condition - the rest good - she advises not taking the wheat out.

And Follings urges farmers to consider the planting date, pointing out wheat planted early has more yield potential.
