Canadian and U.S. Slaughter Numbers Are On The Rise

Both sides of the border are experiencing big hog slaughter numbers.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada reports a year-on-year increase of 8.5% per cent for week ending August 13.

Ontario was above the national average, jumping 13 and half percent from the same time in 2015.

Ron Plain of the University of Missouri says the U.S. national number of hogs slaughtered was up 2.7 per cent from a year ago.

The 2.29 million head were the most ever for a week in August.

Plain also notes after seven straight weeks of decline, hog prices were higher.

The national negotiated barrow and gilt price in America was up $1.81.

AAFC shows the number of feeder pigs heading across the border from Canada is up as well at 9.4 per cent.
