Rain Came Just In Time To Save Soybeans

OMAFRA says if this summer’s drought had lasted another week or two, yield potential for corn and soybeans would have been significantly decreased.

The field crop team points out dry weather during pollination limited soybean yields, but now with the rain, bean pods should fill out close to their original potential.

The agency suggests the rains came just in time to wash away spider mites, as dimethoate insecticides were running out.

Advanced maturity is likely across all crops.

The team suggests farmers keep a close eye on that if late herbicide treatments are planned.

The Field Crop Report says controlling late weeds can help with harvest efficiency and knock down weed potential for next year.

But OMAFRA also notes producers should never expect a full "dry down" of weeds from their pre-harvest treatments.

The team says pastures and hay fields are now back growing as normal.

They expect the 3rd cut of hay will be decent, and feel all livestock should be back on pasture.
