Farms Groups Talk Rural Issues With Ministry Of Transportation

The issue of transportation has become a growing concern among farmers across the province.

This week, the National Farmers Union - Ontario got together with OMAFRA and the Ministry of Transportation to discuss what can be done.

Emery Huszka, President of NFU-O, feels the main issues today are half load restrictions, farm equipment visibility and lines of sight at rail crossings.

He says half-load restrictions are calendar based in many municipalities but farming is a 365-day-a-year job.

The farmers union adds rail crossings are often raised and the high grades can be difficult for pulling loads over.

They feel the addition of level approaches to crossings during future road construction can be a big help.

Huszka also commends Minister Jeff Leal for taking the constructive step of opening up rural road discussions so that they can be addressed.

Others at the meeting drew attention to the number of roundabouts being built, which makes it difficult for farm equipment and transport trucks to navigate.
