North Carolina Finally Catching Up On Winter Wheat Planting

The USDA reports winter wheat planting south of the border to be nearly complete.

The department notes the reason why the number is still at 97 per cent is due to North Carolina farmers still trying to catch up after Hurricane Matthew.

15 per cent more winter wheat was planted this past week in the state as fields have finally dried off.

Farmers there still have about 30 per cent to go before they're done.

The condition of winter wheat in the U.S. is currently rated at 58 per cent good to excellent, a rating of which North Carolina is given a two.

The overall American rating is one point lower than last week's, but still 5 per cent better than this time last year.

89 per cent of the crop has emerged, which is right on par with last year and one per cent better than the five-year average.

The USDA also notes soybean harvest has wrapped up in the states.

Corn harvest is 97 per cent complete, just slightly ahead of usual.
