Cattle Markets Mixed, Retailers Waiting It Out

The Beef Farmers of Ontario notes cattle markets were mixed last week.

228 more cull cows sold through auctions than in the week before, yet prices were up 68 cents at an average of $70.90.

On the other hand, BFO reports 128 less head of fed cattle sold last week, still markets reported trade as under pressure while prices lost $2-$4 per hundredweight.

Fed steers averaged $141.77, down $4.44 on the week.

Fed heifers lost 19 cents, selling at an average price of $143.48.

The farmers also note Ontario railgrade prices held fully steady.

Kevin Grier of the Canadian Boxed Beef Report points out Canadian demand is typically sluggish for this time of year.

He says retailers are in 'wait and see' mode as they're expecting prices to fall.

Grier adds while prices remain high, some bigger retailers are changing ad prices or removing them all together.
