NFU-Ontario President Wants Food Sovereignty

The President of the National Farmers Union-Ontario is wondering what farms will look like in 2050, and more importantly, who will be left to farm them.

Emery Huszka says a lack of government priority to keep people on family farms in the face of free market pressure, combined with years of poor policy planning, has led to fewer younger farmers ready to take over the business.

He feels the solution is in food sovereignty.

The president says that means respecting each country's right to grow their own food, selling only what it has in surplus to those who truly need it, as opposed to dominating small producers into submission by flooding their markets.

The Union adds it's been working hard to reverse current trends.

It notes many be altered with policy changes, including restrictions on farmland ownership by non-farmers, which would protect true land values and make it more affordable for next-generation farmers to take over the business.
