The amount of cattle leaving Ontario for the U.S. has dropped dramatically so far this year.
The Beef Farmers of Ontario note the amount of live fed steers and heifers headed south up until the middle of March were at less than 5,200 head, which is a stark contrast to the 11,000 exported over the same period in 2016.
Cull cow exports so far are at 17,760, which is also down by more than 8,000 head.
Ontario cattle prices, meanwhile, resumed their climb again last week.
BFO reports fed steer prices picked up $2.37 throughout the week, selling for an average of $159.90.
Fed heifers averaged $156.77, a gain of $5.26 from the week prior.
The farmers also say last week was an up-and-down one for the Ontario railgrade market.
But when the dust settled on Friday, average prices had increased $7.25 for steers and $7.50 for heifers.
