The 95th Royal Agricultural Winter Fair starts today in Toronto and included an announcement about more Canadian livestock being raised outside of the country using prized Canadian genetics.
At the Royal today, a $3 million federal investment to the Canadian Livestock Genetics Association was announced to help exporters develop and expand new markets for Canadian livestock genetics.
Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Lawrence MacAulay says the focus of the project will be on exports of dairy, sheep and goat genetics, which in 2016 generated exports of over $150 million dollars.
The CLGA is looking to increase those exports to over $200 million through trade missions, training and promotion.
Later this month, Minister MacAulay will be leading a trade mission to China, which is looking to our livestock genetics to increase their agricultural production.
The Royal Horse show, which hosts more than 1,000 competitors and offers over $1 million in prize money, as well as the various livestock events, kicked off this morning with the National Junior Beef Heifer Show.
The world's largest combined indoor agricultural and equestrian show is on at Exhibition Place until November 12th.
