The first international forum to address African Swine Fever is ongoing in Ottawa.
Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Marie-Claude Bibeau says they are taking measures to ensure vigilant security checks coming into Canada.
She says that Canada has always had great security measures, but she has identified feed and plant sources coming into Canada from ASF infected countries as a risk.
"I have also signed a ministerial declaration implementing stronger import controls on plant-based feed ingredients arriving at certain Canadian marine ports, where products typically arrive from countries of concern with regards to ASF," said Bibeau.
Bibeau says the international countries will be looking to find ways to collectively eradicate the disease and keep it out of Canada.
"We have invited all of the different countries to be around this table and to say how we can collectively find ways to eradicate the disease. But obviously we are taking very important measures to make sure that it doesn't get into Canada," added Bibeau.
Bibeau talked about plans for ASF control at Conestoga Meats in Breslau during a funding announcement lat week.
