Neonic Regs Now Official

The provincial government has made new pesticide regulations official and many agricultural groups still disagree with them.

Steve Denys, a vice president with Pride Seeds, says with the exception of a couple of minor changes, they were pretty much expected.

"Relative to the timing of the implementation, they made some minor changes to the scouting protocols and they made some minor changes in terms of the administration that the seed industry is being subjected to," he says. "The farmer can no longer (after next year) make a decision; he's going to have to hire someone else to come on his farm and field by field analyse whether they need a seed treatment."

Denys says the scientific evidence is not enough to justify a total ban and says Ontario is moving too quickly while other sectors are still studying the issue.
