Trying To Bring Back Trust

A recent agreement between the Delaware First Nation and children's aid could help ease some trust issues.

That's according to Chatham-Kent Children's Services Executive Director Stephen Doig, who says the effects of past practices are still being felt.

"The residential school program and the '60s scoop' that occurred where Children's Aid took a lot of native children into care, I think it's huge, the mistrust," he says. "This is a real step for us toward recognizing that the Delaware Nation should be providing child welfare services to their own people in their own community where ever possible."

Doig says as part of the new agreement, First Nations children removed from their homes will be kept in their communities. He says the Chatham-Kent CAS also has a dedicated team that handles all issues involving First Nation children.
