Disappointing News For Water Wells First

Water Wells First supporters left council chambers disappointed that the construction of wind turbines will continue in Chatham-Kent.

On Monday night, Councillor Michael Bondy's motion to put a moratorium on the construction of wind turbines was rejected.

As a result, Councillor Jeff Wesley presented council with the alternative to bring the issue to the environmental review tribunal. Although Wesley's motion passed, several supporters wearing t-shirts that read "Water Wells First" stood up and left, leaving rows of empty seats behind.

Spokesperson for Water Wells First Kevin Jakubec says he's disappointed by council rejecting Bondy's motion.

"I give credit to Councillor Bondy and Councillor Wesley for trying to bring some awareness to this," says Jakubec. "[It's] very disappointing that council decided not to make any really meaningful attempt to help."

Jakubec and several supporters have been protesting the construction of wind turbines because of the dirty well that is turning up in Dover township.

He says Councillor Wesley's motion to bring the issue to the environmental tribunal brings little to no relief.

"I'm not really sure what he's going to achieve by going to the tribunal," says Jakubec. "I would have been more interested in seeing that there had been more support from council and from the mayor."

Jakubec says it shows an indifference to what the people in Dover township are going through.

During the council meeting, Jakubec went as far as to drink the sample water from Dover to show solidarity with the people who are being affected by the dirty water.

Jakubec and several others are currently appealing the wind farm project just north of Chatham through an Environmental Review Tribunal.
