Chatham Schools Sing For Bragging Rights

A sea of red and white filled the gym at Georges P. Vanier School Wednesday, as students sang about the "good old hockey game."

A select number of them played keyboard, percussion and guitar, while Ursuline College Chatham students filmed the performance. It's all part of an effort to be named one of Canada's top music programs in the CBC's Music Class Challenge.

"Anytime you try to pull over 550 elementary students together, and have them perform independently and sing, it's going to take a couple tries," jokes Vanier Music Teacher Jacqueline McGlynn. "But overall, I think they're fabulous."

Participants in the CBC contest are tasked with selecting a famous Canadian song and recording it for submission. Students from St. Vincent and St. Joseph elementary schools joined in selecting "The Hockey Song" by Stompin' Tom Connors.

McGlynn adds it's a fitting choice.

"That was on the list of several, but I think the love of hockey is so strong in our city and community, that I think it was the obvious choice when I put it in front of the children," says McGlynn.

Winners of the Music Class Challenge will be announced on December 16.
