Finding A Final Solution To Chatham-Kent's Crow Problem

Chatham-Kent council members agree -- something needs to be done about all the crows in Chatham.

In order to move towards a solution, they're asking municipal staff to come back with a report next month detailing what the municipality has done in the past to get rid of the pests, so that they can come up with a viable plan for the future.

Councillor David Van Damme is hoping they get it right this time.

"This is where I feel we have failed sometimes as a city, because we always look at the cost," says Van Damme. "Here we can break it down into manageable pieces and do it much more effectively."

Many of Van Damme's fellow council members are on board with idea that the problem needs to be dealt with sooner rather than later.

That includes Mayor Randy Hope who told council "we gotta blast some of [the crows] out of the sky... we gotta kill a few."

As for solutions, Van Damme says Chatham-Kent can benefit from looking at how other municipalities in southwestern Ontario are dealing with their crow problems.

"The city of Woodstock makes a great business case on what we can do here in Chatham," says Van Damme. "We're an urban-rural community and we have unique problems, albeit, but this is a totally do-able situation."

Municipal staff are set to present their next report on the issue to council on December 12.
