Local Students Are Exposed To Engineering

Engineering is being introduced to hundreds of local elementary students.

An event called "Engineer For A Day" is making the rounds at about 30 schools in Chatham-Kent and Sarnia-Lambton.

Retired Engineer Volker Oettershagen is a presenter and says the Lambton Chapter of Professional Engineers sponsors a bridge building competition every year to select the best one.

Oettershagen says the idea is to stimulate students at a young age and get them to study engineering.

"We want to catch them at a young age to get them interested in physics and science subjects," says Oettershagen, adding engineering is a good profession to get into because the world always needs engineers. "Who's building the planes, ships and bridges? The civil engineers build all the highways."

Oettershagen says the event has been growing for the past ten years.

The bridges will be displayed at the Lambton Mall and the winner will be announced April 1.
