Some local farmers are considering an investment opportunity in the emerging biomass economy.
The Cellulosic Sugar Producers Co-operative held a meeting in Chatham on Wednesday to introduce a new farmer-owned co-op, which would sell wheat and corn stocks to a plant in Sarnia that turns them into dextrose or sugar.
Chatham-area farmer Frank Furlan tells BlackburnNews.com he learned more about the dextrose industry and the opportunity it presents for farmers.
Another farmer who didn't want to be identified says he's not investing because he only grows wheat and is getting too old.
Another meeting is set for Thursday at the Farm Show at the Bradley Centre from 2pm until 4pm.
Furlan says he hasn't made up his mind yet, but is seriously considering investing.
"I got the sense, the market is large and is a good opportunity for farmers to gain a few dollars off corn acres they already have," he says.
Furlan thinks the co-op could be good for Chatham-Kent.
