Dual Canadian Citizens Not Affected by US Travel Ban

The United States has assured Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that Canadians who hold dual citizenship with countries named in a US travel ban are not affected by it.

The Canadian Press is reporting, along with various news organizations, that the US has told the prime minister's office that the travel ban put in place this weekend by an executive order from President Donald Trump did not affect those Canadian citizens with dual citizenships from Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Syria, Sudan, Somalia and Libya.

The US State Department had announced earlier Saturday that those from the above countries would be under a travel ban for three months.  Trump's executive order had also suspended Syrian refugees from entering the US until a complete re-evaluation of the application process took place.

Saturday evening, a federal judge in New York issued an emergency stay of the travel ban for those from the named countries who were either in transit or being detained by US border officials.

Those with Canadian passports should expect to be processed normally at US border crossings, said Kate Purchase, the prime minister's communications director.  This includes those points of entry at Detroit and Port Huron, Michigan.
