Mugridge Found Guilty At Police Act Hearing

Chatham-Kent Police Service Sergeant Robert Mugridge has been found guilty of 50 counts of discreditable conduct at his disciplinary police act hearing in Chatham.

The prosecution and defence are now making a joint recommendation to dismiss Mugridge.

Two charges of deceit are still being discussed and a decision is expected in a few weeks.

A victim at the hearing, who didn't want to be identified, says justice is not being served. The victim adds that Mugridge owes him $3,000, but doesn't think he'll ever see it, calling the whole thing "a joke."

During the Tuesday hearing, it was revealed that Mugridge asked neighbours and friends for up to $500,000 in loans between 2011 and 2015 -- mainly to pay his son's university tuition and to help alcoholic and drug addicted sisters. However, few were repaid.

The prosecution says most requests were made while he was on duty.

Over 50 fraud charges must still be dealt with in court at a later date.

Prosecutor Ian Johnstone says details of the dismissal must still be worked out because the case is very complex.

"It's unusual that there's 50 counts of discreditable conduct," he says. "It's a high number of charges against the officer and it's a high number of victims, there's approximately 40 victims."
