School Board Reacts To Recent Break-ins

The Lambton-Kent District School Board is working with local police following a couple of break-ins at two public schools in Chatham.

Police say someone broke into Indian Creek Public School and John McGregor Secondary School sometime over the long weekend, stealing several electronics worth thousands of dollars.

LKDSB Media Relations Officer Heather Hughes says students and guardians have all been notified of the situation.

"We've had a long standing relationship with local police and we continue to follow their direction as it relates to these investigations," she says.

In terms of security, Hughes says the schools are already equipped with security systems and won't be changing them.

Police say even though the schools were properly secured, the suspect(s) still managed to get in by damaging the locks.

In the meantime, the school board is being diligent in reminding students and staff to take proper precautions.

"We have made sure to remind all staff and students to take necessary precautions to continue to protect their personal belongings and the board equipment," says Hughes.

The equipment that was stolen is valued at over $25,000, so Hughes says the board's information technology team is currently working with police and taking inventory.

The investigation is ongoing.
