St. Clair College is getting a $1.9-million boost from the provincial government, as part of a $50-million funding announcement for Ontario's colleges.
The province is investing in all 24 public colleges to mark the college system's 50th anniversary this week.
"I guess you worry when the government doesn't think of the colleges, but this was a nice surprise that we weren't expecting," says Vice President of College Communications John Fairley. "I wish we had a 50th anniversary every year."
Fairley says the grant will be shared between the Windsor and Thames campuses based on capital needs, including things like new equipment and technology, specialized software, and learning resources to enhance the way programs are delivered.
It'll also allow the college to outfit the new National Powerline Training Centre in Chatham.
Fairley says they're looking to the funding as a way to help create the skilled workforce the region needs, so that we don't have jobs without people.
"A lot of people in industry asking us to train people in certain areas, or buy certain equipment to meet the needs of our community," he says. "We have got to make sure that we use these funds to help strengthen our toolbox."
