The Associated Press says its sources say Spicer decided to quit over his objections to the appointment of a new White House communications director, Anthony Scaramucci.

Spicer was named White House Press Secretary for Trump in December, and assumed the role upon Trump's inauguration in January. Prior to joining the Trump Administration, Spicer had been Communications Director for the Republican National Committee.
He time as Press Secretary was often a bumpy one, as he faced criticism for making demonstrably false or controversial statements to reporters, such as when he told reporters that the crowds at Trump's inauguration ceremony were the "largest audience to ever to witness an inauguration, period – both in person and around the globe."
In recent weeks, he appeared less often in front of reporters, while Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders helmed most media briefings.
