'Walk a Mile' Gets Extra Donation for 10th Anniversary

A local fundraising and awareness walk will get an additional donation from the police in honour of its 10th year in town.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes' is an event where men walk one mile in red high heels to spread awareness and stop rape, sexual assault and gender violence. This year's walk is happening June 3 and will mark the 10th anniversary in Chatham-Kent.

Usually, the local police department donates $500 to the event, but with a surplus of money available in the auction fund, combined with the event being around for a decade, the police services board has decided to give $500 extra this year.

Police Chief Gary Conn loved the idea at Tuesday's board meeting and even had some advice for the men attending the event.

"I've participated in the 'Walk a Mile' since it's inception 10 years ago," Conn said. "Double up on your socks and right after the event, soak your feet in cold water because it will bring the swelling down."
