Chatham woman charged in sideswiping incident

A 20-year-old woman from Chatham is accused of sideswiping a parked tow truck and nearly hitting a man in Guelph.

Provincial police said an officer had been conducting a traffic stop with help from a tow truck on Highway 6 near Laird Road around 8:15 p.m. on March 17. Both vehicles were parked on the shoulder of the highway with emergency lights flashing.

The tow truck driver -- who was wearing reflective safety gear -- was crouched beside the truck. Police said a northbound vehicle sideswiped the front end of the tow truck and almost hit the man.

The 20-year-old has since been charged with dangerous driving. She has a court date in Guelph set for April 16.

OPP are reminding drivers of the "move over" legislation, making it clear that it's not just an option for drivers to move their vehicle over when passing emergency vehicles, it's the law.
