Firefighters lace-up for skating fundraiser

Chatham-Kent firefighters will be out on the ice Thursday night and they're hoping residents will join them.

A free public skating event will be held at the Thames Campus Arena from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. The event is part of a fundraiser ahead of the New York City Memorial Stair Climb on May 4. The six firefighters who will participate in the annual stair climb will also be at the skating event.

Money raised at the skating fundraiser will be split between Canadian Blood Services, where a donation will be made in Jocelyn McGlynn's name, a 21-year-old student from Chatham who is has been receiving stem cell treatment. A donation will also be made to A Soldier’s Journey Home, which is a campaign that is currently working towards building a home for a wounded veteran in the U.S.

Residents who are unable to make it out to the skating event but would still like to donate or show support will have another chance to do so towards the end of April. A second fundraiser will be at the Sobey’s in Chatham on April 27 at 9 a.m. where residents are asked to donate in a “boot drive”.
