The municipality is asking the public to respect construction sites after the Fifth Street bridge in Chatham was vandalized over the weekend.
According to a statement from Chris Thibert, the Director of Engineering & Transportation for Chatham-Kent, damage to equipment and materials was identified Monday morning above and below the bridge. He said electrical wires feeding street lights along the bridge were cut and ductwork under the bridge along Simcoe Lane was damaged. He added the contractor's trailer was broken into and valuables were taken.
“Our team is working to complete this project as quickly as possible," the general contractor said. "Such acts are very frustrating to us as it causes delays to the overall project.”
Thibert said with construction season starting up, the municipality would like to remind the public to obey the traffic and pedestrian control measures in place.
Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to contact Chatham-Kent police. An estimate of damage hasn't been released yet.
