Leamington expects influx of birders in May

For bird enthusiasts around the world, Leamington is on the bucket list.

Every May, shorebirds flock to Hillman Marsh, and along with them, thousands of birders for the Shorebird Celebration.

The shorebird habitat at Hillman Marsh is unique in North America because it provides the perfect resting spot for birds on their way back to their summer habitats, and mudflats to ensure they do not leave on an empty stomach.

For birders, it provides the perfect spot to watch these birds in action.

"Combined with Point Pelee National Park's Festival of Birds, the viewing opportunities in the Pelee/Hillman region during spring migration are unparalleled," said Danielle Breault Stuebing, the director of communications and outreach services at the Essex Region Conservation Authority. "Hillman Marsh is a fabulous place, especially in spring, to see numerous waterbirds and shorebirds feeding regularly -- The birds are often very close to the shoreline which makes for exceptional viewing.

A large bird blind is open for visitors to photograph and study the birds, and experts from the Ontario Field Ornithologists will be on hand six days per week.

The event runs from May 1 to May 19.
