More freight trains using Chatham-Windsor corridor this week

If you are hearing more freight trains and whistles in Chatham and Windsor, you're not imagining things.

There are more CN Rail trains using the Chatham and Windsor corridor due to the train derailment in the Sarnia-Port Huron Tunnel on Friday morning.

The Town of Tecumseh tweeted Tuesday afternoon that CN Rail has advised the town that an additional six freight trains per day are being re-routed through Windsor until at least Saturday. Rail operations in Chatham will also be temporarily affected.

"This is to inform you that following a freight train incident in the international rail tunnel between the United States [Port Huron] and Canada [Sarnia], VIA Rail Canada will work with its partner railway [CN] and administer a temporary change to railway operations in your community, on the Chatham subdivision," said Via Rail.

CN trains will be scheduled to run on the track during the day and at night on a temporary basis.

As many as 46 CN Rail cars derailed Friday morning inside the rail tunnel under the St. Clair River.

Aamjiwnaang First Nation Emergency Planning said the derailed cars included two carrying automobiles on the Canadian side of the tunnel. Diesel and motor fluids were spilled inside of the tunnel, and there was a high concentration of CO detected. One tank car containing sulphuric acid was also breached in the tunnel but contamination was contained and environmental monitoring continues.
