With heat and humidity blanketing southwestern Ontario, residents of the region could see severe thunderstorms on Friday.
Environment Canada issued severe thunderstorm watches for London and Middlesex County, Elgin County, Oxford County, Chatham-Kent, and Windsor-Essex on Friday morning. A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for London, Middlesex County, and Oxford County just after noon.
The weather agency says conditions are ripe for the development of severe storms.
"Daytime temperatures in the low to mid-30s with humidex values of 40 C or higher are expected today and again on Saturday," Environment Canada said in a statement released Friday morning. "Little relief is expected tonight and Saturday night as temperatures will only fall to the low to mid-20s with humidex values remaining near 30 C. A cooler and less humid air mass is forecast to arrive in the wake of a weak cold front Sunday."
The severe thunderstorm watches come as heat warnings remain in effect across the region. Environment Canada says thunderstorms are also possible on Saturday.
It is also reminding people that the main threats from severe thunderstorms are strong wind gusts, large hail, and heavy rain.
