Flood watch issued ahead of high winds, rain

Residents who live along Lake Erie should be prepared for possible flooding this week.

The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority has issued a flood watch for the region in response to forecasted rainfall and strong winds.  Winds from the south are forecasted to exceed 35-40 kilometres per hour by the end of the day on Monday and into Tuesday, with wind gusts expected to exceed 60 km/h. As a result, waves on the Lake Erie could reach 1.5 metres in height. As well, 20 to 25 millimetres of rainfall is forecasted between Monday evening and Tuesday afternoon.

The conservation authority said there will be a risk of shoreline damage, erosion and flooding until Tuesday afternoon.

South facing shoreline communities on Lake Erie are at greatest risk, such as Erie Shore Drive, but other areas are also at risk including the high bluff areas.

Residents are being advised to use extra caution by avoiding the shoreline and any waterways with elevated water levels.
