'Boxes and Blankets' fundraiser aims to shed light on homelessness

The fifth annual Boxes and Blankets event is coming to Chatham this fall in hopes of bringing awareness to those suffering from homelessness in the area.

Organized by Chatham Hope Haven, the event encourages supporters to sleep on the street for a night with only a blanket and a box. Wanda Bell, communications co-coordinator at the Haven encourages churches, businesses, organizations, youth group leaders, teachers, families and individuals to sign up and gather pledges.

"Sleeping on the street is not easy; it is uncomfortable and could be cold – but this experience will give participants a chance to see how difficult it is to live on the streets," she said.

Money raised will also go towards the mission, which opened in November 2017. Chatham Hope Haven provides a sheltered place for up to 10 homeless men to sleep as in addition to receiving access to food, a shower and laundry.

"The need is real," said Bell. "People are homeless and in need of assistance. Many need a listening ear and direction on how to improve their situation and the volunteers at Chatham Hope Haven offer that."

Boxes and Blankets will be taking place on September 20 from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m. Pledge forms are available at the Hope Haven office, located at at 183 Wellington Street West in Chatham or online by clicking here. Anyone looking to participate is asked to call the organization at 519-351-4010.
