Man accused of stealing from his great-grandfather

A 22-year-old Wallaceburg man is facing charges after allegedly breaking into his great-grandfather's home and taking off with some of his personal belongings.

Police said during their investigation, they learned that an elderly man was awoken at around 3 a.m. Sunday by a noise in his home and while he was looking for what caused the disturbance, he allegedly found his great-grandson hiding in the living room.

Officers said the great-grandson had entered the home through a window, adding that the elderly man allowed his relative to sleep in his home out of fear of a confrontation.

Police said in the morning, the elderly man learned that his great-grandson was gone and that he had allegedly taken off with his great-grandfather's Team Canada jacket, cell phone, cash and debit card.

Investigators said they learned that the debit card had been used at a local convenience store multiple times, adding that it had not been the first time the man had stolen items from the home.

Police were able to track down the great-grandson in Chatham on Thursday and arrested him. A 22-year-old Wallaceburg man is now charged with break and enter and two counts of theft. He was later released pending a future court date.
