A virtual event to support the Chatham-Kent Hospice has raised over $79,000, which will be used for operational needs at the facility.
Like many fundraisers this year, the annual Hike for Hospice took on a virtual format in order to avoid social gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were asked to take part in some sort of physical activity between June 1 and June 14.
Despite the change in plans, organizers said many people honoured loved ones by participating and sharing a post or video over social media.
“It was amazing to see so many people getting active over the last few weeks in very creative ways," said Amanda McKinlay, Hike for Hospice co-chair. "Even though there is so much uncertainty in our everyday lives, the participants and sponsors were unwavering in their support of hospice and we are very grateful.”
Aside from individuals or families who participated in the virtual event, businesses also took part in the Corporate Challenge. This year's winner was MBI Financial of Blenheim. Organizers said the team won bragging rights and a catered coffee break.
“Through this COVID-19 crisis, Hospice continues to support local families through their end-of-life journey. These funds will help ensure this care continues to be available at no cost to residents and their families when they need it most,” said Nathan McKinlay, Hike for Hospice co-chair and Chatham-Kent Hospice Foundation director.
Since the Hike for Hospice went virtual this year, participants were not required to pay a registration fee. Last year's event raised $145,000.
