Man accused of robbing two banks

A man from Chatham has been arrested and charged with robbery after two banks were held-up in downtown Chatham just minutes apart.

Chatham-Kent police said the first robbery took place at the CIBC Bank on King Street in Chatham shortly after 10 a.m. on Tuesday. According to police, a man was arrested Tuesday morning for failing to attend court to provide a DNA sample. The DNA order was fulfilled and the man was released just before 10 a.m. with a future court date. It was not long after that a man went into the CIBC, handed the teller a note demanding money, and took off empty handed.

Officers then responded to a second bank robbery at the Scotia Bank on King Street in Chatham not more than 15 minutes after the first robbery. Police said a man also presented a note to the teller and was given an undisclosed amount of cash. No one was physically injured during either incident.

A suspect was arrested within 30 minutes of the first robbery. Police allege it was the same man who had just been released from custody. A 31-year-old Chatham man has been charged with two counts of robbery and is being held in custody waiting for a bail hearing.
