With heavy rainfall expected overnight, flooding could be possible in some areas within Chatham-Kent.
The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) has issued a flood outlook statement ahead of 30-60 millimetres of rainfall that is expected to begin Sunday afternoon. The heaviest rain is predicted to fall overnight into Monday. Environment Canada has also issued a rainfall warning for the municipality.
Recent rains have kept the ground wet and the conservation authority said localized flooding and ponding are likely in low-lying areas.
Flooding along the Thames River is not expected at this time, however, the LTVCA said it is possible the river could rise up enough on Monday to flood over the sidewalk along the river in downtown Chatham.
"Residents are advised to check their properties for potential drainages issues and to clear catch basins and storm sewer inlets of leaves and other debris in order to help reduce flooding," the conservation authority said in a news release.
Residents are also urged to use caution around rivers, ditches, and streams, as conditions could become dangerous.
